Nissen Energi Teknik delivers MAN CHP solution in London

June 20, 2011

In close cooperation with UK based turnkey contractor Vital Energi, Nissen Energi Teknik from Denmark delivered a CHP solution at the Olympic National Sports Centre (NSC) at Crystal Palace in London. By combining a highly efficient turbocharged intercooled MAN engine with additional components fitting the site specific conditions into a tailor made CHP solution, Nissen Energi Teknik managed to realize a groundbreaking 93 percent efficiency.

The new system will reduce the operating costs and carbon emissions of the NSC, leading the way in meeting the Mayor of London’s 2025 carbon reduction target of 60%. In order to meet the mayor’s target the London Development Agency (LDA) is funding the £900.000,- project as part of its £13.000.000,- refurbishment of the Centre. The outdated heating and electricity system of the 1960’s Grade 2 listed building requires modernisation, as the NSC will be used as a training facility during the lead-up to the 2012 London Olympics.

The possibility to work with a core MAN engine was key for Nissen Energi Teknik to be able to incorporate their own expertise within their design and build a tailor made solution fitting the site specific conditions. In order to fulfill the high heat requirement a major focus was maximizing heat recovery. The CHP-set therefore has been equipped with an exhaust gas heat exchanger which cools exhaust gasses to a temperature of less than 35°C, the set has furthermore been fitted with intercooler and jacket heat recovery systems and lastly a heat pump installed in the engine enclosure captures the heat radiated from the engine and alternator. With this CHP installation NSC will reduce 1850 tons of CO2 emissions while cutting their energy bills by up to £400.000,- per year. The resulting payback period therefore is as low as 3,5 years.

MAN Rollo values the way in which Nissen Energi Teknik makes use of their expertise and takes full advantage of both the high electrical and thermal efficiency of our MAN engines. Working closely together we hope to be of service to many more satisfied customers.
